Today I Choose Joy
Say it to yourself: Today I choose joy. Because too often we choose to feel a different way instead of the kind of joy we deserve to have every single day of our lives. That’s why reaffirming ourselves using motivational statements like these can be so effective. Other statements can be helpful too. For instance: today I choose to be happy, today I choose to let go of anger and negativity, today I choose to let any criticism or disapproval wash over me without affecting me, and today I choose to live to my full potential. Notice that all of these statements utilize the word ‘choice’ because at the end of the day how we feel is a definitely a choice.
But why would anyone choose to feel a different way? The truth is that sometimes we choose to feel less than happy because we feel that we do not deserve happiness. We grow up with a lot of messages telling us we aren’t worthy – we’re not physically attractive enough, we’re not capable enough, we’re not rich enough or confident enough. Whether we want to or not, we end up internalizing these messages and they lead to us feeling bad about ourselves. So even when we want to feel happy, we choose to feel sad instead.
Happiness is not always a choice though. Sometimes people suffer from depression or other medical conditions that do not allow you to feel happy even if you want to. In less severe instances though, there is a possibility that if you try – if you let go of the idea that you deserve anything less than true happiness – you can achieve it and more.
